Let us first understand the name of the temple. Kashi is the ancient name of the city now known as Varanasi (or Banaras).Vishwanath is a Sanskrit word made up of two parts: Vishwa = the entire universe Nath = lord or master Which means "Lord of the Universe.". According to some saints and spiritual masters, it is said that Kashi belongs to Vishwanath, and Vishwanath belongs to Kashi.

वैसे तो यहाँ कोई मूर्ति नहीं है क्योकि यहाँ एक आत्मलिंग है जो कि भगवन शिव के 12 ज्योतिर्लिंगों में से एक है। अतः यहाँ के देवता स्वयं त्रिदेवों में से एक भगवान शिव है।
Actually, there is no idol here, because this temple houses a self-manifested Shivling (Atmalinga), which is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. Therefore, the presiding deity here is Lord Shiva himself, one of the Tridevas (the Holy Trinity) of Hinduism.

मंदिर का इतिहास A Bit of History
इस मंदिर का इतिहास बहुत पुराना है। इसे कई बार तोड़ा गया और फिर से बनाया गया। वर्तमान मंदिर का निर्माण सन् 1780 में इंदौर की महारानी अहिल्याबाई होल्कर ने करवाया था। बाद में, पंजाब के महाराजा रणजीत सिंह ने मंदिर के गर्भगृह के ऊपर सोने का कलश और गुंबद चढ़वाया।
This temple has seen a lot. It’s been destroyed and rebuilt several times over the centuries. The current temple was built in 1780 by Queen Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore, who was a great devotee of Shiva. Later, the golden spire and dome were added by Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the king of Punjab, using real gold.

यहाँ कैसे पूजा होती है? Daily Worship and Rituals
- रुद्राभिषेक – शिवलिंग पर जल, दूध, शहद आदि से अभिषेक किया जाता है।
- आरती – सुबह और शाम भव्य आरती होती है, जिसमें मंत्र, शंख और घंटियों की गूंज से माहौल दिव्य हो जाता है।
- श्रावण मास – जुलाई-अगस्त के बीच शिवभक्तों की भारी भीड़ लगती है।
- Rudrabhishek: A special prayer where Shiva is bathed with holy offerings.
- Aarti: Morning and evening aartis are powerful, with bells, chants, and devotion filling the air.
- Shravan Month: During July–August, thousands of devotees visit the temple as this is considered the most special time to worship Lord Shiva.
